Physical Education Curriculum
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
The curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities;
-
are physically active for sustained periods of time;
-
engage in competitive sports and activities;
-
lead healthy, active lives.
PE and Sport at Parkfields is about opportunity. This opportunity comes firstly through the PE curriculum, where we offer a broad range of sports and activities for the pupils which we hope will engage and motivate them. These are split into 3 categories:
1) Team games such as football, rugby, basketball, netball, cricket and rounders
2) Artistic performance such as gymnastics and dance
3) Performing at maximum levels such as athletics, cross-country and health and fitness
Within this four year journey at Parkfields school, our aim for our pupils is;
Year 5: to be confident and show engagement and persistence when learning and be able to execute some simple skills
Year 6: to show increasing coordination and control in their skill developement and able to select and apply these skills in conditioned environments
Year 7: to be able to choose and link appropriate skills and to become increasingly confident in using tactics and strategies
Year 8: to becoming increasingly competent in their technical ability and decision making when performing under pressure
Opportunity is then further developed through the schools challenge programme, where pupils are inclusively invited to join in a range of extra-curricular clubs, practices, non-competitive and competitive sports through inter-house competitions at lunchtimes and after school.
We extend these opportunities to include inter-school fixtures against other schools in sports such as football, netball, rugby, basketball, cross-country, athletics, cricket and rounders where pupils can progress to compete in district, county and national competitions. Pupils are awarded 'caps' and can achieve badges based on milestones reached when participating for the school. These successes are shared in weekly celebration assemblies.
Our aim is for these opportunities to foster a life-long love of sport and to help the pupils to find local sports clubs and organisations outside of school where their passion can be developed further.
Further opportunities are provided in outdoor and adventurous activities through day trips to local climbing centres, residential trips in the UK to experience surfing, coasteering, sailing, paddle-boarding, kayaking and trips abroad to learn how to ski.

Westoning Netball Club
Westoning Netball club was set up in 1997 by Dot Bassett and her daughter Julie; both are still involved with the club, especially Dot. Dot and Julie have both created a fantastic club for our girls to be part of; it has gone from strength to strength over the 20 years it has been running, winning many competitions and tournaments. We have girls from the club playing at county level, regional level and have even represented England.
