Music touches the very heart of our humanity and a sense of the wonder of music has touched human societies throughout history. Music education offers young people the chance to understand, perform and create in an aural dimension that often sits outside our capacity to describe in words. For many pupils, the music they love will be part of the narrative of their lives and bring colour to the experiences that shape them.

Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our school community and beyond, music brings us together, through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of our school community, enriching each pupil and member of staff, while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust, which make a great school. 

Through music education, we aim to steadily increase the development of musicianship through:

• singing, 

• listening,

• composing,

• performing and instrumental performance.

We also aim to support all pupils in their musical progression by:

• offering a rich and varied musical framework that nurtures fundamental musical techniques;

• building musical knowledge,

• offering a clear pathway towards mature musical understanding,

• teaching and practising musical notation, providing the opportunity for all pupils to develop musical skills independently, both now and later in life.
