Assessment & Reporting

The purposes of assessment are: to maximise the achievements of our pupils and to raise the level of motivation; to report on pupils’ potential and attainment to parents; to encourage pupils to aim for higher standards; to monitor the progress of the work throughout the school and report this to the wider community; to compare outcomes when possible with local and national data; and to use information gained to set targets for the future.

Assessments across the school

Teacher Assessments

Each subject department has a system of internal assessments that provides evidence for each pupil's current attainment and progress against the school curriculum and National Curriculum standards. These systems give the teachers the tools to track progress and measure overall attainment for cohorts and classes, whilst helping to identify barriers to learning to ensure learning can be progressed. (Please see assessment schedule below.)

GL Tests and assessments

GL tests are used termly to measure attainment and progress in English and Maths, and provide a comparative judgement of attainment and progress against national statistics. (Please see GL assessment information below.)

KS2 Statutory Assessments - SATS

SATS are standardised assessment tests administered by primary and middle schools in England to children in Year 6 to check their educational progress. They are a marker used by the government, to measure national educational standards. The setting and marking of SATs tests are carried out in the UK schools by the Standards and Testing Agency.

The SATs usual take place mid-May from Monday until Thursday. Below are the assessments that take place on each day.

  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) paper 1 questions and paper 2 spellings
  • English reading paper
  • Mathematics papers 1 (arithmetic) and paper 2 (reasoning)
  • Mathematics paper 3 (reasoning)

Attitude to Learning

Attitude to Learning is assessed and reported to parents on a termly basis.

The focus of the 'Attitude to Learning' grades is on how each child approaches their learning in each of thir lessons. Our aim is to support the pupils in developing the right attitudes, practices and ksills to make them effective learners.

The grades for 'Attitude to Learning' refelct our high expectations and there are four grades using the numerical values of 1-4.

1 - Excellent

2 - Good

3 - Variable

4 - Poor

If a pupil has a grade 1-2, they can feel confident that they will achieve well. Where they have a 3, there will be specific areas to focus on and if there are a range of attitudes to learning that need to improve, a pupil will receive a grade 4.

There is a grade for each lesson attended, realting to the learning in that subject.

We want to encourage active engagement in the learning process and for pupils to understand how their attitudes and actions contribute the most to their success, now and in the future. With a positive attitude to learning, a pupil can feel confident that they will have the best opportunity to achieve their potential.

GL Assessment Information

WHY DOES PARKIELDS MIDDLE SCHOOL USE GL ASSESSMENTS?

GL’s expertise in assessment has been gained from decades of working with schools and teachers.

Their goal is to enable every child to realise their full potential by taking a ‘whole pupil view’ which takes into account ability to achieve, current attainment, and any barriers to learning they may have.

GL work with partners, including King’s College London and the University of York, to ensure that their assessments are the most rigorous, academically sound and in line with current best practice in education. GL assessments are also widely used by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) to measure the impact of their intervention research, and they are also used by schools and Governments in over 100 countries worldwide.

The right assessments and data are vital to support teachers seeking to demonstrate progress, close the attainment gap and ensure every student is maximising their potential.

GL assessments help us meet these challenges with a range of assessments that are built on the best academic research and extensive trialling, use a powerful digital assessment system, and generate instant reports that enable you to make quick and effective use of the data.

Please Note: The focus of these assessments is to facilitate the school’s ability to ensure all pupils reach their potential. Therefore, we do not publish the results of these tests.

PT (PROGRESS TEST) ASSESSMENTS

The Progress Test Series (PT Series) helps accurately measure how our school and our students are performing in English and maths and against the national average – and measure both in-year, and year on year progress.

Standardised on over 100,000 children, the easy-to-use tests assess knowledge, understanding and application of the core curriculum subjects, helping The Coleshill School to understand current levels of attainment and identify any gaps in learning at both an individual and cohort level.

The tests are used mid-way through the year and at the end of the year, to measure and track progress. Detailed reports analyse key dimensions of learning for each subject and provide a question-by-question breakdown to help identify those students who require more challenging targets and those who may need extra support.

EXPLAINING THE STANDARD AGE SCORE (SAS)

The Standard Age Score (SAS) is the most important piece of information derived from standardised assessments. The SAS is based on the pupil’s raw score, which has been adjusted for age and placed on a scale that makes a comparison with a nationally representative sample of pupils of the same age across the UK. The average score range is between 89 and 111, any scores lower than 100 are deemed below the expected standard for a pupils age/NC year and scores higher than 110 are above average.

NGRT

Developing literacy and reading ability is fundamental to a pupil’s ability to access the curriculum in secondary school. The New Group Reading Test (NGRT) is a standardised, termly assessment that reliably measures reading skills against the national average to help you get to the root of any problems precisely and quickly. NGRT provides information about sentence completion and comprehension skills allowing you to identify where difficulties lie. Being a termly assessment allows for regular monitoring of reading progress and measuring the impact of intervention, and a pupil’s reading ability can be benchmarked using the Standardised Age Score (SAS).

The assessment is adaptive – questions are automatically presented based on a pupil’s ability as they complete them, so more able pupils can be challenged while weaker readers are kept engaged.

NGST

New Group Spelling Test (NGST) is an adaptive assessment which allows monitoring of spelling skills, benchmarked against the national average.

Questions are delivered via audio and the assessment is adaptive – meaning that questions change based on pupil’s responses, so more able pupils can be challenged while weaker pupils are kept engaged. The reports provide the Standard Age Score (SAS), allowing us to compare each pupil’s performance with other children of the same age, and track progress. Reports also provide customised implications for teaching and learning as well as offer practical help with next steps in the classroom.

CAT4 (COGNITIVE ABILITIES TEST) ASSESSMENTS

CAT4 is a widely used test of reasoning abilities for children in secondary school. We use it to help idenitfy specific areas of need for individual pupils, as and when required.

It is an assessment of developed abilities in areas known to make a difference to learning and achievement – namely verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning – and it provides an objective perspective on potential student achievement.

Please watch this short video explaining the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) batteries it will help you understand why we are using this tool in

EXPLAINING THE CAT4 ASSESSMENTS

The reports generated from the CAT4 test provide a learning bias profile, again another clear short video can be seen below, but in short we can use these tests to identify pupils and students who have a bias towards verbal or spatial learning, which may be impacting them in some subjects. Students with very high verbal bias may excel in written and discussion tasks in English or history, but struggle in STEM subjects, and likewise a pupil with a high spatial bias may learn best through diagrams, but struggle in verbally-based subjects. Those students falling in the balanced profile may be very low or very high, but they will benefit from all types of teaching support.
